The Course of Fire
For Service Rifle Excellence-in-Competition Matches
Is the National Match Course.
50 shots in four stages;
Offhand,
Standing to sitting or kneeling,
Standing to Prone,
Slowfire Prone.
Offhand or Standing

Range:  200 yards
Shots:  10
Time allowed:  10 minutes
Target:

The nine and ten rings are black, the nine ring is 13 inches in diameter and the ten ring is 7 inches in diameter. There is an "X" ring used to break ties in the center of the ten ring.

Conduct:  A three minute prepartation period is allowed during which the targets are visible.  During this time you may dry fire and prepare to shoot your record shots.  The target is then lowered to a "half-mast" position.

The Range Officer's commands are:
"Your three minute preparation period has expired."
"LOAD"
"IS THE LINE READY?"
"THE LINE IS READY"
"READY ON THE RIGHT"
"READY ON THE LEFT"
"READY ON THE FIRING LINE"
The targets are then raised for 10 minutes during which time you fire your shots.  Rounds are single loaded.  The target is "pulled" (lowered into the pit) and the value and location of each shot is marked.) (See: Scoring Slow Fire)

Standing to sitting or kneeling
Range:  200 yards
Shots:  10
Time allowed:  60 seconds
Target:  Same as above
Conduct:  A three minute prepartation period is allowed during which the targets are visible.  The target is then lowered to a "half-mast" position.  You may "build your position, dry fire, and prepare to shoot your rapid fire during this time.

The Range Officer's commands are:
"Your three minute preparation period has expired."
"SHOOTERS RISE"
"WITH YOU BOLT REMAINING OPEN, LOAD"
"IS THE LINE READY?"
"THE LINE IS READY"
"READY ON THE RIGHT"
"READY ON THE LEFT"
"READY ON THE FIRING LINE"
The targets are then raised for 60 seconds during which time you sit or kneel, close the bolt, place the rifle off safe and fire your shots, service rifle shooters must shoot two shots, reload using another magazine or en bloc clip and fire the remaining eight shots.  The target is lowered when the time expires.

All shots are marked with small spotters (we use flourescent orange golf tees at Quantico).  The score is recorded on a number board with chalk.  The board is hung on the upper left corner of target frame and the targets is raised.

There are specific procedures for excessive and insufficient hits. These I will address in the future on another page.
