The Double-crested Cormorant fishes in the ponds and the Red-crowned Parrots are a San Marcos favorite.
Site #2--
- Southwest Texas University's ponds on the campus near University Drive provide refuge to Green-backed Herons as well as tri-colored herons occasionally. A Double-crested Cormorant often dries his wing feathers on the "No Fishing" sign at the pond in front of the J. C. Kellam Building.
A local flock of Red-crowned Parrots flies among the cypress. Western Kingbirds nest near Old Main (the gothic building with the red roof).
Stream-side woods on Sessom Drive attract warblers during migrations.
- SWT's Aquarena Springs has many resident waterfowl and wild birds at Spring Lake.
The slough where the entrance road crosses contains a wild area worth looking over, but stay near the far end of the parking lot to avoid golfers.
Admission to the grounds is free. Aquarena's xeriscape plantings attract hummingbirds.
