The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher abounds in Central Texas, the Loggerhead Shrike is a bit rarer.
Site #5--
- 1.8 miles past the Hatchery on 621, turn left on CR 266. Find the pond 1/2 mile from 621 on the right, across from Davis Ranch Road.
Pond and surrounding fields are often excellent birding: shorebirds, ducks, gulls, cormorants, egrets, and a resident Osprey.
Explore seldom traveled back roads, roadsides, fields, hedgerows and fencerows. You will see small and large ponds for various species of wintering sparrows such as Lincoln's, White-crowned, White-throated, and Harris'. Harriers, Kestrels, and Red-tailed Hawks are common, with Loggerhead Shrikes on fence posts and power lines.
You should spot Eastern Bluebirds and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers too. Wet fields yield Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs and some Upland Sandpipers.
In wetter spots, snipe and dowitchers are seen. Follow 266 for 1.5 miles to the San Marcos River crossing. Spring sightings of Painted Buntings, Orchard Orioles, and Blue Grosbeaks occur here. Return toward San Marcos after crossing the river by turning left on Hwy. 80.
