August/September 1998 Newsletter |
Annual Meeting The annual meeting was held July 19, 1998 at A.S./A.P. We had a work party after the meeting and managed to dig out the foundation for an outdoor cage which was donated for the A.S./A.P. cats. It will be connected to the window of the cattery for summer use. Many, many thanks to the members who came and helped with this project. Soon we hope to put a patio block or brick surface down to complete the project. Secretary's Minutes Meeting was brought to order at 2:15 p.m. Old business: Monroe County Board of Health wants rabies prevention shots for rescuers and people working in the cattery. It's costing too much for them when we get bitten. Three shots per person at $185.00 per shot is the latest estimate. Carol will volunteer to check out the price at Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. Rosemary made a motion to have shots, Joanne seconded. Joanne volunteered to do a special fund raiser for the cost of the shots. Rosanne reported on the Homeless Homer project. We have $56.00 worth of symbols. It will take $44.00 more in order to turn them in. She is also still collecting IGA UPCs. We need 100 more in order to collect on that project. Reminder: Be sure to turn in your cash register receipts at Jubilee and mark them for A.S./A.P. They will be saved until it is our week again. We received $170.00 last time. New business: Kwik Trip Charge Card (fund raiser). Kwik Trip has a new community program for charge card credit. Three cents for every dollar spent will be banked for A.S./A.P. and as soon as we have 10 members that designate us we will begin receiving money. Program is good in three states; Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Kwik Trip will donate an extra one percent to the cause. We will be registering for a Barnes and Noble book fair again this year. It will be on a Sunday afternoon this time. (Watch for time and date in a later newsletter) During the recent storms many of our members were caught in a power outage that lasted several days. A.S./A.P. members who didn't lose their water and power took water to people who had. Joanne volunteered to develop an emergency roster of members. During a natural disaster we will contact each other to find out who needs help. Fund raisers - A motion was made that garage sales be designated half to A.S./A.P. and half to the St. Clare Mission, Sparta. Discussion followed and a unanimous vote was made that all monies stay with A.S./A.P. Private yard/garage sales can be designated any way the organizer wishes. Carol stated that as soon as she gets certified in the State of Wisconsin as a vet she will treat A.S./A.P. member's animals (shots, non-clinic checkups, referrals, etc.) for a very nominal fee. Meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m. Financial Report Complete figures are available to anyone on request. Fund Raisers Coulee Region Dog Show - For the second year in a row many members of A.S./A.P. and a friend who is not a member donated their time to help us raise $500. We were outside stewards for the Coulee Region Kennel Club during their show in the Lacrosse Center, August 1 & 2, 1998. |
Once again everyone who volunteered had a great time and said that
they want to do it again. We have volunteered with the
Kennel Club for next year if they want us. For planning
purposes, it's always the first weekend of August. If we
can get enough people next year, we can volunteer to do
"pooper scooping" for them and earn another
$500. Talk about an entry level job!!
Yard Sale and Pool Table Bash - We did very well on the yard sale,
making over $600.00 total on two weekends. The money was
split as advertised between A.S./A.P. and St. Clare
Mission, Sparta. We had a good time bashing the pool
table, taking out all our agressions on it.
Aluminum Can Drive - We will be participating in the national program "Paws to Recycle" this year. From September 1 to November 30, 1998 we will be asking Monroe County residents to save aluminum cans for us. We will have a bin at A.S./A.P., S & S Distributing, Highway 71, Sparta and Sherwood Forest Recycling, 112 E. Washington, Tomah. Please consider saving your aluminum during that time frame for us and encourage your friends and family to do so also. We are enclosing material explaining the program in this newsletter. Warrens Cranfest Parade Once again this year we are looking for people to walk with us in the Cranfest parade. It's the easiest parade, only 1 mile, and you get great parking for the fest for free. Sunday, September 27, 1998 is the date; we usually have to be there in the line-up area by 11-11:30. Call 269-3525 if you want to join us this year. We are working on a trailer so that tired pets (and people) can ride. Wish List Does anyone have or know where we can get either patio blocks or bricks? We need them in order to finish the outdoor run. The run is 6 feet by 10 feet and we have put in a wood landscape timber frame and sand base for it. Full price would be over $110.00, needless to say, this is not an option. We are really looking forward to using the run (to say nothing of the cats) and want to get this finished before winter sets in. Thank Yous We have several people to thank especially this month. Rosanne, one of our members, has asked her dog obedience students to make a donation to A.S./A.P. instead of charging a fee. We have already received several donations and truly appreciate her thoughtfulness. If you are interested in obedience classes please call us at 269-3525 for more information. Jennifer, not a member yet, has managed to arrange to have two magnetic signs donated to place on a car for parades and during animal rescues. The signs are being donated by Brown Signs Designs, Sparta. A very special thank you and god speed to Trisha, who is moving with her husband Paul to the east coast soon. Paul is in the Army, so we have to let them go, otherwisee we would kidnap Trisha and keep her here forever. Thank you so much, Trisha, for all your help at our fundraisers. Welcome We want to welcome two new veterinarian services to this area. Dr. Esta Parrish is based out of Wilton and has a mobile vet clinic. Drs. Marta Engel and Jan Schilling have a Wellness Center in Viroqua and are offering acupuncture and chiropractic services for animals. Monroe County is on the cutting edge of animal care, can you believe it? |
